POSITION OVERVIEW
The Managing Editor is responsible for editing and overseeing the workflow of all IGNITE full-length stories, event pages, editorials, announcements and articles for IGNITE’s website. The Managing Editor is accountable for all publication content and supervises and delegates writing assignments to the part-time staff team of Content Writers.
Reports to: Marketing Coordinator
RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to
- Be aware of all newsworthy IGNITE initiatives happening on campus
- Contribute fresh and innovative ideas to IGNITE through stories, layout, or general operations
- Coordinate story schedule for Content Writers
- Copy-edit all first and second draft stories
- Write editorials and columns to deadline
- Be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of team members to utilize the team’s skill sets in the most advantageous manner
- Ensure IGNITE style guidelines standards are met
- Address issues that may arise with or between staff members
- Attend part-time and full-time staff meetings when required
- Contribute to IGNITE communication campaigns

- Willingness to be on camera is an asset
- Assist the Marketing Coordinator and Sr. Manager, PR & Communications with additional external communication tasks
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must either be a current Humber ITAL or the University of Guelph-Humber fee paying student at the time of application and for the duration of your employment.
- Journalism experience and web writing experience an asset
- Minimum 1 year writing experience; 2-3 writing samples required at application
- Experience with WordPress is an asset

DAY IN THE LIFE - MANAGING EDITOR
- 8:30 a.m.: Punch in and greet the writing team, virtually and/or in person.
- 8:40 a.m.: Do a quick media scan of similar blogs, and student-focused sources to help determine trending topics.
- 9:00 a.m.: Check for any updates to the content calendar or notes from the Sr. Manager, PR & Communications.
- 9:30 a.m.: Review notes and edits provided on their articles, make any changes if necessary
- 10:00 a.m.: Morning break.
- 10:15 a.m.: Start reviewing articles, interviews and web pages submitted by the Content Writers
- 12:00 p.m.: Lunch break.
- 12:30 p.m.: Host weekly Writers Meeting with the Content Writers and Sr. Manager, PR & Communications.
- 1:00 p.m.: Editorial Planning Meeting with Sr. Manager, PR & Communications.
- 2:00 p.m.: Continue to review articles, interviews and web pages submitted by the Content Writers.
- 3:00 p.m.: Afternoon break.
- 3:15 p.m.: Continue to review articles, interviews and web pages submitted by the Content Writers.
- 4:30 p.m.: Punch out and head home.
